Ayurvedic Treatment
The treatment for hair loss in Ayurveda is an elaborate
and step-based process that includes the steps given
below. This is usually done in an Ayruvedic clinic.
Hair massage
Hair massage with dveharidradi oil (a blend of herbs
haldi, daruhaldi, etc.) is very effective for the
treatment of hair loss as well as dandruff.
This treatment procedure is also called the snehana
(unction). Here, the hair and scalp are massaged gently
and thoroughly with lukewarm oil. The massage is done by
gentle, circular movements of the fingers.
Steam Bath
The steaming therapy is very effective for the treatment
of hair loss. Svedana (sweating therapy) is very
effective for the treatment of hair loss. However,
direct streaming of the head is not advisable.
Therefore, neem water steam therapy is advised as part
of the treatment. This is done some time after the head
massage. In this procedure water is boiled along with
neem leaves and a towel is soaked in boiling neem
water.
The towel is then tied on the head in such a way that it
covers the whole scalp. Once it cools down, the towel is
removed.
Dashmool Vasti
Dashmool vasti is used for the vasti therapy which has a
cleansing effect on the body. The patient suffering from
baldness is ministered Dashmool vasti therapy for
internal cleansing and detoxification. Dashmool vasti is
very effective for cleansing the body of toxins from the
deeper tissues.
Thalapothichil
Thalapotchil therapy is very effective for the treatment
of falling hair. Thalapothichil is also helpful for the
treatment of premature graying of hair. Not only that,
this therapy is beneficial for the treatment of
insomnia, low blood pressure and chronic sinusitis too.
For Thalapothichil, soak about 25 gm of Amla
(gooseberries) without seeds in 900 ml of buttermilk
overnight in an earthen vessel. Alternatively, priyaladi
lep can be used for the treatment of hair loss.
Priyaladi lep can be prepared by taking an equal
quantity of fine powder of all the five ingredients,
mentioned below, and mixing them with honey.
-
Chironji (Buchanania lazan)
-
Black gram
-
Rock salt
-
Kuth (Saussurea lappa)
-
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
This paste should be applied on the scalp and left till
it dries. The hair should then be rinsed with an amla
shampoo.
Nasya
Shirovirechen and nasya terms are used interchangeably
in Ayurveda. In Sanskrit, the term shiro means ‘head’
and virechan means ‘elimination’ of the doshas.
Therefore, the term shirovirechan literally refers to
the elimination of the doshas from the head. The
elimination therapies like vaman, virechan or
vasti are
not suitable for removing the toxins from above the neck
region. Therefore, shirovirechan is used for removing
the toxins from that part of the body. In this procedure
the drugs are administered through the nostrils.
According to the ancient sage, Vag Bhatt, “nasa hee
shirso dwaram”, which means, “nose is the doorway to
head”. Therefore, the toxins accumulated in the head,
neck, brain, ear, nose and throat are removed through
the use of nasya.
The synonyms of shirovirechana are shirsh-virectan,
murdha-virectan, naavan, nasya, and
nastan karma etc.
The procedure is the same for all these therapies
wherein the fine power of herbs, medicines, medicated
oils or juices are administered through the nose of the
patient.

Importance of Nasaya |
| 1. |
Nasya not only helps in removing toxins from the head,
neck, brain, eyes, ear, nose and throat region, but it
also helps in snehan (unction), shaman (pacifying the
toxins without removing them), bhringan, tarpan
(nourishment) and gives immunity to these parts. |
| 2. |
With the use of nasaya, mucous membrane of nasal cavity
is stimulated and therefore, other associated organs are
also affected. Therefore, the obstructed kapha, in the
channels, is removed which results in proper blood
circulation in the head. |
|
3. |
The procedure of
nasaya helps in the elimination of
spasm in the nose. It also dilates the constricted
bronchial tubes and bronchioles, thereby helping in the
treatment of dyspnoea and asthma. |
| 4. |
Nasaya helps in eliminating toxins from the head, neck,
brain, ear, nose, and throat and cleans all the
channels, which results in improved circulation of the
nourishing dhathu in the deeper tissues. In this way,
nasaya helps in preventing many disorders related to
these organs like paralysis, various headaches, diseases
of sensory organs, sinusitis etc. |
| 5
. |
It helps in increasing the
ojus in these parts and
provides strength to sensory organs, prevents ageing,
hair loss and graying. It also keeps the skin of the
face and body free from wrinkles. |
| 6. |
There are many types of
nasya treatments used in
Ayurveda. |
Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a specific treatment for hair loss.
Herein, the patient lies down on his back on a special
type of table. Thereafter, warm oil is continuously
poured over his forehead. In certain cases, milk or
buttermilk is also used as a replacement for oil. The
procedure nourishes the brain cells, scalp channels,
roots of hair and provides overall nourishment to the
nervous system. Shirodhara is also useful for the
treatment of mental disorders, mental stress, high blood
pressure, migraine, and insomnia as it rejuvenates the
mental faculties and enhances the brain functions.
The Final Word
The Ayurvedic system of medicine is very effective in
treating the loss of hair. It is not only safer but has
also no side effects. This is the reason why more and
more people are switching to Ayurveda for health and
beauty.
